How Do I choose my link partners? - 16 April

When I am working on my linking strategies for
my own web sites I will ALWAYS (without fail) visit
the home page and link-back page of my potential link
partner. The first thing I look at is Google
Page rank. To assist me with this the Google Toolbar is
installed inside my Mozilla Firefox browser.
If the homepage page rank is less than PR2 and the main content
is not closely related to the theme
of my web site then I know already that I am unlikely to enter
into an exchange. I will sometimes decide
to exchange links with closely related pages of PR1, but NEVER of
PR0. My one and only reason for this
stipulation is that there is a high risk of linking to an
apparently innocuous web site (or web page)
that has been "black listed" in some way by a search
engine. Even though I understand that a PR0
might just reflect a web sites newness, I am not taking the
chance.
Regarding the link-back page (the URL where my
link partner will place a link back to my site on their
site),
I am more relaxed about PR value. If the page belongs to a
high ranking domain or a domain with similar
content to mine and has PR>0 then I will still consider a
link-back from a PR0 page. Having said that I will
often be deterred if a page contains many hundred of links that
appear to link indiscriminately to all and
sundry. I often stumble upon link pages that begin in
earnest with a title such as "Links to SEO
Resources".
As I scroll down I see several good looking links such as
"London Based SEO Services" and "Free SEO
Advice".
Relevance begins to descend as I scroll on.
"Jane's cat food shopping mall",
"Flower arranging in San Francisco", "Naughty
Nora's bedtime stories". Huh! Forget
it! Unless this page
has exceptional rank I'm outa here!
My next check involves passing my
experienced eye over the content of the web site,
particularly the front
page. I look for spelling errors, dreadful grammar
mistakes, evidence of poor design and layout.
If I see a lot of junk links and/or adverts unrelated to my theme
then I might hit the back button -
unless of course all my previous checks have been highly
favourable.
Having established that I am quite keen to
exchange links with a page, what other things should I check
before I jump in? I always glance down at my Alexa Toolbar
in the bottom right corner. For each page
I visit Alexa shows me a small graphical display of 6-month
traffic trend and an overall Internet popularity
score. For me, a bad sign is when there is no data
available - perhaps because the page is newer than 6 months.
Perhaps for a more sinister reason. It doesn't take
much to arouse my suspicion when surfing these days.
Not least because I know from reading about the experiences of
other webmasters that just one bad link
exchange could damage or destroy many months of hard work on my
own web site! Generally I am always
encouraged by an Alexa traffic trend that shoes a steady climb or
even a flat line. If the popularity
score shows less than 1000,000 in addition to a good 6 month
trend then it's thumbs up and I'm happy with my
Alexa check. If I feel any doubt I just click on the Alexa
graph to explore more detail and try to spot
any oddities.
So far so good. What else should I
do? I would copy n paste the URL for the page under
scrutiny into
a Google search box. Hit the Home key to move to the start
of the URL address and then put in "info:".
If Google cannot find any information on the page it will tell
you. This means that the page has not
(yet) been indexed by Google (or worse has been dropped from the
indexes). Therefore the page will
not show up in any searches presented to Google. In this
case I would go back to the potential
link exchange partner and try to negotiate an alternative
page. It is quite feasible that the other
webmaster didn't know the page wasn't indexed, and in all
other respects he might be a genuinely good
guy with a terrific site.
If you have doubt about how to use the info trick, just copy n
paste this
line into your browsers Google search box:
then you know it is not indexed.
Otherwise you should see one or more links in the results.
