Feedback
on the 28 step computer maintenance procedure

October 2009

Hi Nigel,

Thank you so much, you have just saved me about £400 because now my wife sooooooooo loves her laptop that she doesn't want a new one now and this is entirely down to you !!  Well with a very small effort on my part.   I followed your brilliant 28 stage plan as closely as I could, downloading most of the freeware and paying for Max Spyware Detector and Max Registry Cleaner.  I already had AVG Free on her laptop so didnt need to download that. The only thing I would comment on is that when you download the Max package, surely there is no need to get free downloads for registry cleaners? Wouldnt that just confuse the pc or have I done wrong by paying for the Max Registry cleaner when I could have got a free one?

It took quite a lot of patience to actually get her up and running with a bit of trouble getting the pc to recognise her dongle again but once the laptop started up in earnest we were both absolutely amazed at the speed of her pc now.  It is unrecognisable to the one she had before your guide. She had over 5000 errors in her registry alone and 75 dangerous threats in her computer - trojans and viruses - all gone now thanks to you.  I am even thinking of doing this service for those who have the same problems. I am so confident of your guide.

Thank you
Mike

My reply to Mike was...

It means a lot to me to receive your positive feedback on this procedure.  It sounds like your wife's laptop was very badly infected and you are lucky to get it back to good working order at all.  This is a fairly new web page of mine and I am busy working full time for a large Software House - but I have plans to improve it and add to it over the coming weeks.  I haven't had any complaints yet and if I do then I will try to improve the procedure based on that criticism.

The Max registry cleaner is indeed a brilliant program.  You are right, there is no need that I know of to use other "free" registry cleaners but I have recommended at least one free one because so many free ones are a waste of time and can be dangerous. I only recommend what I have seen work well, and some people may not be able to afford to pay for one.  Further, I would recommend that you purchase a license for AVG - or at least download and run the full version for free for one month.

In the past, on badly infected machines, I have found that AVG full version will often find and clean a few things that MAX doesn't find.  When a computer has been so badly infected it is important to clean it as thoroughly as possible - because the tiniest holes will  quickly grow into bigger ones and soon more trojans will get in.  Having said that, my AVG scanner rarely comes up with anything apart from the odd dodgy looking cookie.

I spend half an hour a week running scans and cleanup programs and I have a good firewall - ZoneAlarm Pro.

Together we can destroy PC World for ever!

all the best, Nigel
