Step 7 - Remove Existing Security Programs
How to uninstall unwanted programs and applications

I know this step is likely to be unpopular and will invite contentious comments.  You must be tough and resolute and follow my advice.  If you decide not to uninstall your existing security software, please read the following notes and I hope to change your mind.

* Note 2 - What is wrong with your existing computer security programs?

* Note 3 - A true story - Tony's problematic firewall

* Note 4 - Big Bully sales tactics

* Note 5 - Unsupportable security software and terrible technical support

How to remove an installed program (Windows XP)

To remove a program that is installed on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Control Panel.  Then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  2. In the Currently installed programs box, click the program you want to remove.  Then click Remove.
  3. If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.

Some programs can be more difficult to remove.  Difficulties can arise for several reasons.  There may be a corruption in the Windows registry.  In some cases a program will make it difficult for you to remove it using the standard procedure.  Norton Security products have a history of this.  Do not despair.  Help can always be found on the Internet.  Or you can describe your problem in an e-mail.

If the standard Add/Remove Programs tool fails to remove your program here are some other things you can try:

Click Start, click All Programs.  Drag your mouse to the program you wish to remove.  Some programs will have an uninstall option on this menu.

You can also try to use a third party (non-Microsoft) removal program.  There are some good free utilities available to do this.  The CCleaner utility (you will download and install this in step 12) has a handy tools menu.  If you are unable to uninstall your security programs at this point it is fine to come back to this later.
